When the Corvevette was launched in January 1953, there was little if any sales strategy behind it, but Harley Earl, head of design for General Motors, was convinced that America was ready for its own sports car. The rise of the Corvette, from this tentative but innovative beginning to its position as a prestigious and world dass supercar, can be traced through the pages of the sales brochures, catalogues and advertisements that have been produced over the last 38 years, and are reproduced here in The Corvette Catalogues.
There are the brochures from the late fifties, when chassis improvements and increased horsepower were the order of the day. By the early sixties the grace and timeless style of the Sting Ray was being trumpeted by Chevrolet, while in the mid-sixties the catalogues were full of options - from air-conditioning to brute horsepower in the form of 427-cubic-inch engines. From the late sixties to the early eighties the Mako Shark styling of the Sting Ray endured, though the catalogues spoke less of power and options and more of luxury and prestige. And then, in 1984, Corvette catalogues became primers on the high-tech engineering and styling of the new model, which has shown steady improvement into the nineties, culminating in the awesome, 180-mph ZR-1.
